About the Nigerian Gas Flare Tracker

When crude oil is extracted from onshore and offshore oil wells it brings with it raw natural gas to the surface.

In Nigeria a vast amount of this is burned directly into the atmosphere. The hazardous air pollutants emitted from gas flaring have been shown to severely impact human health and the ecosystem.

The system uses satellite data measured by the VIIRS instrument (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite.

The summary measurements and calculations displayed for each flare group are conservative and based on limited satellite data. We suggest these could be multiplied by a factor of 5 to bring them closer to NNPC figures.

This initiative is comissioned by the Nigerian Ministry of Environment and managed by NOSDRA. It was created by Stakeholder Democracy Network with software development by Sentido-labs.
